Punjab has been steadily acquiring a strong national footprint as far as the services
sector is concerned, with the IT/Knowledge Industry gaining prominence in the state.

The Export from 326 units registered with STPI Mohali was to the tune of Rs. 827
cr in 2008-09. Over the last five years, the growth in exports from STPI Mohali
has been at a CAGR of 21.75% with exports from units in Punjab growing at a rate
of 26.80%.
The units registered with STPI Mohali are a mix of IT/Knowledge Industry companies.
Most of the companies in Punjab which are registered with STPI Mohali are focused
on the business of e-commerce, medical transcription, system software development
and providing web based applications.
Punjab as an
IT/Knowledge IndustryIT units refer to companies in the IT hardware,
IT software and other Knowledge Industry units such as Biotechnology, Nanotechnology,
and Telecommunications etc. IT software industry includes IT software, IT services
and IT Enabled Services.
Knowledge Industries include IT/ITES, Nanotechnology, Consulting, Biotechnology,electronics,
and telecommunications. This also includes Research and Development services and
other specialized Institutions.

of cost effective manpower. Due to the lower cost of operations in Punjab as compared
to other destinations, the IT/ITeS investors are now keen to explore the potential
of Tier II and III destinations of the State which are fast emerging as knowledge
hubs.
The Government of Punjab had initiated the development of IT/Knowledge Industry
at a State level with Mohali being a well established IT/Knowledge Industry hub.
The district possees global technology majors such as
HCL Infosystems,
Dell, First Source and Quark

spread over
an area of 51 acres with a potential to generate 37,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Presently, Mohali has the largest concentration of IT companies and scores high
on industrial infrastructure owing to an existing IT SEZ and a major share of the
upcoming IT infrastructure that includes 6 IT SEZs and 9 IT Parks and Entrepreneurship
Development Centre at Mohali. All the IT parks have got formal approval from the
Government and are envisaged to be completed by 2011-2012.
A
Knowledge City, spread over 381 acres is being set
up at Mohali comprising of esteemed institutions including the proposed Indian Institute
of Science, Education & Research (IISER), Indian School of Business (ISB) and National
Agro-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI). Also proposed in the district is a 306
acre MRTS, an international airport, expressway, ring road, 4 malls, habitat centre
and a 5 star hotel.
Meanwhile, NASSCOM has considered cities in Punjab such as Ludhiana and Jalandhar
having high potential for attracting IT/Knowledge Industry business. The State is
prioritizing some clusters such as
Mohali-Roopnagar,
Jalandhar-Kapurthala,
Ludhiana and
Rajpura-Patiala for the development of IT/Knowledge Industry. An area
of 226 acres has been earmarked for industrial development with close to 100 acres
being marked for establishment of ITeS industry at Kapurthala. An area of over 280
acres has been demarcated for the development of an IT Park in Roopnagar adjoining
the upcoming IIT.
