Recognising the potential of various attractions that Punjab has to offer to domestic and foreign tourism, the government accorded the status of Industry to tourism in 1996. In the Industrial Policy announced in 2009, the Health Tourisms Projects as defined by Department of Health have also been given the status of industry. Following major initiatives have been taken in the field on Tourism:

• Promotion of mega tourism project for development of Amritsar city along with the development of Fort Gobindgarh and Heritage village in Amritsar.
• Implementation of Tourism Development Master Plan 2008-2023 by UNWTO*.
• Development of Punjab Luxury Train.
• 5 Star & Luxury Hotel projects under development namely of Taj Group, Radisson Group, Hampshire Group etc.
• Initiatives in Tourism such as Eco Tourism Projects, Farm tourism and upgradation of roadside eateries
